This is the Science of the Light, Simplified for you. And now, your host, Mike Vulcan.
Mike (00:37)
All right, everybody, welcome to another episode, episode thirteen of the Red Light Therapy Podcast. Today, as always, we have Dr. Enman, our co-host. He's a longevity and sports performance specialist from West Texas. Dr. Allen, welcome to the show.
Alan (00:52)
Well, it's great to be back and to talk about topics that everybody's always interested in. Red light there.
Mike (00:58)
Yep, always so knowledgeable. Dr. Inman has two clinics in Costa Rica and is a medical director of a stem cell clinic. So as a red light therapy expert, he's going to share his wisdom so you can make the most of your red light therapy devices. We're going to keep this episode short, less than 15 minutes. And today we are continuing our series called The Strategic Protocols and Myths. There's a lot of snake oil in this industry, and we're going to find out about them today and then how to mitigate that. So
By the way, for all you listeners out there, if you want to ask a question, just go to red light therapy podcast.com, submit your question, and it'll be answered on a future episode. So today's title of the episode is The Goldilocks Rule: How to Find Your Perfect Dose. And Dr. Allen, I've come up with probably five or six questions to help people find their perfect dose. My first question to you is: how close should I actually stand to my panel? And specifically me, I mean
My Biomax Pro, my Platinum LED Biomax Pro, how close should someone stand to their panel for it to be effective?
How Close Should I Stand to My Panel?
Alan (02:01)
Well, there is no ideal distance when it comes to this. It has to do with what you're trying to treat. So if we're looking at, for example, skin, you need to be between sixteen and twenty-four inches away. If we're looking at like, for example, hair growth or you look at joints, tendons, like ligaments, and even deep tendons and deeper structures.
Then what you're trying to reach is between eight and fourteen inches. And that way you're you're getting to where you need. Now, when we're talking about the Biomax Pro, it is very important that that we know it's high powered. And so a lot of the clinical studies, they're based on like 20 to 100 milliwatts per centimeter squared. While if we look at the biomax.
Pro, if we're, you know, at six inches, it'll reach 292 milliwatts per centimeter squared. And that's why they're so great to use because it's less time to reach that optimal level that we're looking for.
Is 10 Minutes Enough, or Should I Be Doing More?
Mike (03:11)
Interesting. Okay, so is ten minutes enough for red light therapy or should I be doing like an hour? Can I overdo it?
Alan (03:19)
No, no. So what we look at is between ten and twenty minutes because what we're doing is at least doing usually around ten minutes per side, because the idea is that you cover as much surface area as possible. And we need to know that it's not about longer sessions because there's a bi fat basic mode, which means the more you do past what was optimal.
Then it's usually not giving you a positive reaction. And so we always try to be consistent. That is the key about red light therapy. It's about being consistent. And when it comes to photobiomodulation, it's really important to know that it's going to be able to affect so many different tissues because it comes down to skin, and we're looking at hair. Like one of my my patients, one of these days, she was like, I barely got my panels and I've been consistent. And she goes,
My eyebrows have grown like big time and she's in her fifties. And so she's like overwhelmed because she's used other products and none of them come close to this. And this is totally natural because all we're doing is using the wavelengths of red light therapy and near infrared to be able to maximize or optimize our mitochondrial production in all of these cells.
How Do I Know if I'm Standing Too Far?
Mike (04:40)
Makes sense. Yeah, it's very effective for hair growth from what I for what I'm to understand. how far away does does someone know if they're if they're standing too far, like does do you know that? Can you pick up on that? Is there a an indicator there?
Alan (04:53)
no, there's there's no really way for you to just go, wow, I'm just standing too far. The best way is to measure so if you're you're beyond twenty four inches, then if you're you're working with skin, then you're too far. Or if you're beyond fourteen inches and you're trying to work what is, for example, hair, you're trying to do ligaments and tendons, muscle, you're gonna end up being too far.
The idea is that you're within the distance of what you need.
Mike (05:27)
What I do is I literally just have a measuring tape when setting up my panels. And I you know, if it's twelve to twenty four inches, that's that's great. maybe people should do that as well. Does does my skin color affect how much light I should be receiving? Does it change the timing, the daily timing of my sessions?
Does Skin Color Affect Session Timing?
Alan (05:45)
Yes, although it really doesn't make much of an effect, but someone who has darker skin tone has more pigmentation, the melanin absorbs the red light. So they usually need more time. And when I say more time, it's like one to three minutes more if you if you get my drift. It's not like, this person has to be doing 20 minutes more than what they're used to. And one of the important things about
hyperpigmentation or or I'm sorry about someone who has high pigment not hyperpigmentation in these patients it's really important to know that whenever they're using near infrared they don't need to do it this way why because it it goes past the pigments and so there is no absorption so in that case they can just rely on the same amount of minutes as everyone else.
Can I Use Red Light Therapy Twice a Day?
Mike (06:45)
Interesting. So to speed up results, can someone use it twice a day?
Alan (06:49)
Okay. So no medical studies have ever shown that if you're doing it twice a day, it has better results. So this is one of those indications based on medical studies. If you're doing it more than once, you're really not gonna get a different, you know, outlook on what what you're trying to achieve. Now, what it is what is important is that again I say consistency, and this is only based on what medical studies have shown thus far. That doesn't mean in the future
Things won't change because if people tend to do more and more medical studies and all of a sudden they see a difference, which comes down to everything in medicine, you know, sometimes, you know, there's a protocol and then as time goes by, more studies come about and changes occur. But at this point, doing two or three or more, it's not gonna make a difference compared to just doing one.
Physical Signs You've Had Enough — or Too Much
Mike (07:44)
That makes sense. Are there any physical signs that I've had enough light or too much light?
Alan (07:50)
Well, if you if you've had enough, the idea is that you you have to not be able to compare it to ultraviolet, right? This is completely different. And so photobiomodulation, it's important to know there's warmth, there's increased microcirculation, there will be reduced joint pain. We're gonna end up having improved mobility and overall like a greater sense of relaxation, which is really important. But if you've overdone it.
then you can have tendency to feel fatigued. you can have increased soreness. On top of that, you can have like even a mild headache and you know, diminishing benefits, you know, despite your progressively just doing this over time and being consistent. So the idea is you just don't overdo it.
Adjusting Your Dose for Deep Tissue vs. Surface Treatments
Mike (08:40)
Okay. those are really good answers. I do have one more that has come up. I we get a lot of athletes that buy platinum therapy lights to get that deep tissue kind of therapeutic benefits. How does someone like that, how do they adjust their dose for deep tissue versus something like a superficial skin tissue wrinkle reduction type of dose?
Alan (09:06)
So when we're looking at the case of like muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints. So eight to fourteen inches of distance, would be perfect and treating seven to fourteen minutes in that area. And I'm actually gonna speak for myself. So I've had like a whole week of problems with my neck and I've been trying to rush to work and I haven't been using the red light in today.
I said, you know, I have to use the red light. So I went and put it on the near infrared. And I was having a lot of pain. And I laid down and I did 14 minutes. And I tell you, it changed me. Like the pain diminished at least fifty percent, which for me, that's pretty important. And that's without using med. So you know, a lot of people might go, Well, this guy's trying to sell platin. No, this is true.
I mean I I only speak the truth to everyone so that people know how powerful these lights really are.
Closing Outro
Mike (10:10)
Yeah, it's interesting you had that experience. Today I woke up this morning with extreme. I played a very long tennis match yesterday. My forearm was just throbbing in pain. It was just so stiff and tight. And I went to go do red light therapy and it was virtually gone after the session. and I haven't had problems since. It's been like four hours. So Dr. Allen, thank you so much. hope everybody out there listening got some good advice regarding the red light therapy panels, especially your platinum.
Therapy panels. And we're gonna do another episode soon. It's gonna be about precision tuning. So listen to the not the the future episode on that. Thanks again, Dr. Allen.
Alan (10:47)
Thank you. Take care.
